History
Meriah was brought up in New Orleans, the daughter of a prominent banker. Her father also owned a larged plantation there. Being French, she mixed with only the best company. At fifteen, she took a creole as a secret lover, much to her father's chagrin. She and Joseph had always planned to steal away together. But that was not to be. Her father got wind of the secret liasons and decided to fix things for his daughter. He sent her off to France to live with an uncle and his family. That uncle, Pierre, was entranced by her beauty. He decided to use her for his own ends - political and otherwise. As personal favors to his friends, he would allow them time with his lovely young niece. Soon, her innocence had been taken and she was, essentially, a whore. Finally, when the uncle fell from grace, he sent her back to America, a used and somewhat jaded woman. Meriah's father, Robert Broussard, wanted nothing to do with her after that, calling her many terrible names and beating her every time he caught sight of her. Finally, Meriah had had enough and struck out for the west. Along the way, she took up work doing the only thing she knew how to do.
Traveling around the country, Meriah had many experiences and met many people, including her best friend, Sweet. Eventually, the duo wound up in Silver Creek, where Meriah began to help run what was then called the Cat's Paw. Once the Cat's Paw was taken over by Armand Chavelle and renamed the Gemstone, Meriah remained on as manager. THis choice, however, destroyed her relationship with her lover, Cabe. Pregnant with Cabe's child, Meriah remained working for Armand. Armand took the child as his own, giving the little girl his last name and treating her as a daughter. Meriah remains the madam and business manager at the Gemstone and lives at Maison d'Lilas in town.
